Suspected Maoist rebels have attacked a village in central India, killing seven people and wounding at least two others.
Authorities in the state of Chhattisgarh say the attack occurred in a Konta village, some 500 kilometers south of the state capital, Raipur. They say several villagers are missing, but that it is not clear if they were abducted by the rebels or if they just ran away.
Chhattisgarh is home to a significant number of the Maoist rebels who claim to be fighting for the rights of poor peasants and landless farmers.
More than 140 people have been killed in stepped-up violence between the rebels and the Indian government since the beginning of the year.
