India's defense minister says his country will not join others in pushing for democratic reforms in military-ruled Burma.
Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee told a security conference in Singapore Saturday that India does not believe in exporting ideologies. He said it is up to the people of Burma to decide what type of government they would like to have.
Some other regional neighbors of Burma have criticized the government for its continued detention of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Indonesia's foreign minister said Friday no country can claim human rights abuses are its own internal affair.
Burma extended Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest last week and called the case a domestic issue.
The U.S. government is preparing to introduce a resolution on Burma in the United Nations Security Council in the coming weeks.
