Taiwan President Makes Surprise Visits to Libya, Indonesia

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has made surprise visits to Indonesia and Libya on his way home from Latin America.

Mr. Chen stopped in Libya on Wednesday before arriving on the Indonesian island of Batam Thursday . He is headed back to Taipei from a trip to Costa Rica and Paraguay.

In Libya, Mr. Chen was greeted by family members of leader Muammar Gadhafi.

China blasted Libya for allowing the visit. Libya has diplomatic ties with Beijing, which considers Taiwan a renegade province.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Thursday Libya had seriously violated its long-term commitment to the one-China policy. He said the visit would have a negative impact on bilateral relations between China and Libya.
