Iraq Insurgents Ambush Police Convoy, Kill Six

Iraqi police say insurgents have ambushed a police convoy near Baghdad, killing at least six policemen and injuring 10 others.

They say the attack took place late Thursday.

The policemen were from the southern Shi'ite city of Najaf. They were on a trip to a U.S. base in Baghdad to pick up new vehicles.

A senior police official in Najaf said several of his men were missing.

Separately, at least seven policemen were wounded when a suicide car bomber detonated his
explosives-filled vehicle near a police station in the northern city of Mosul.

The U.S. military said Thursday that American and Iraqi troops have killed a wanted terrorist with ties to Osama bin-Laden and other senior al-Qaida figures. A statement said Rafid Ibrahim Fattah also known as Abu Umar al Kurdi was killed during a raid near Abu Ghraib in western Baghdad late last month.

The U.S. military also reported the death of two U.S. troops near Baghdad, one from a roadside bomb Thursday and the other due to enemy action Wednesday.
