China Bans Sale of Human Organs

China says it plans to introduce new regulations for human organ transplants, including a ban on human organ sales.

China's health ministry said today Tuesday that regulations that go into effect July first will ban the purchase and sale of organs.

It says the new rules will prohibit hospitals from taking organs without written consent, and limit transplant surgery to China's top hospitals.

Chinese legislators have been pushing for years for a law to regulate human organ transplants.

Safety concerns about China's transplant industry have also become an international issue. Earlier this year, Japan announced it would examine cases involving at least seven Japanese patients who fell ill or died after undergoing organ transplants in China.
