A top Chinese official is urging dialogue between Nepal's political parties and the king's government that sidelined them.
State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan is on an official visit to Nepal. He met with opposition politicians Friday in the capital, Kathmandu, and said China hopes all sides will keep in mind the good of the country and its people. He is scheduled to meet with King Gyanendra later today.
Nepal has been in political turmoil since the king seized absolute power 13 months ago. Opposition politicians want to restore democracy. The king says he dismissed the government because it failed to shut down the country's ongoing Maoist rebellion.
The rebels want to replace the government with single party communist rule. Nepal is in the fourth day of a transportation blockade imposed by the rebels that has virtually shut down the nation.
