20 Killed, Scores Injured in New Delhi Bomb Blasts

  • Patricia Nunan

At least 20 people have been killed and 70 injured in a series of blasts rocking the Indian capital. A total of four explosions took place - two of them in market places filled with crowds shopping before a holiday weekend.

Police sealed off the crowded Paharganj and Sarojini Nagar market areas following the explosions. The two areas are popular with western tourists. Another blast took place on a bus and a fourth in a less heavily populated market area.

The timing of the explosions - all of which occurred late Saturday - suggests a coordinated bombing attack. Officials have not yet said who they believe is responsible. Suspicion for the apparent attack is likely to fall on militants from the disputed region of Kashmir, which is divided between India and Pakistan. Islamic insurgents are fighting for the predominantly Muslim area to be independent or to merge with Pakistan.

The blasts come as senior Indian and Pakistani officials meet in Islamabad to improve improve cooperation in Kashmir, as both countries struggle to provide relief to tens of thousands left homeless following the devastating earthquake earlier this month.
