Thousands Rally for Peace in Nepal

More than 10,000 people have marched through the streets of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, to demand an end to a civil war that has claimed more than 12,000 lives since 1996.

Human rights activists, students, teachers, journalists and representatives from various non-governmental groups carried banners reading "We want peace, no conflict" and "Turn schools into zones of peace."

Wednesday's rally was held to mark International Peace Day.

The Nepalese government is battling a deadly Maoist insurgency aimed at overthrowing the constitutional monarchy and replacing it with a communist state. Protesters Wedneday urged King Gyanendra to begin peace talks with the rebels, who earlier this month called a unilateral three-month ceasefire in the conflict.

This march was separate from protests over the past two weeks demanding the restoration of democracy in Nepal. At least 200 activists and teachers were arrested in those protests.
