International Campaign for Tibet Receives Dutch Human Rights Prize


An international group which is fighting for democracy in Tibet has received a prestigious Dutch human rights award.

The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) was awarded the Geuzenpenning award Saturday in a ceremony in the Dutch town of Vlaardingen.

Hollywood actor Richard Gere, who has been ICT's chairman since 1997, accepted the award on its behalf.

A special envoy of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, also attended the award ceremony.

The Geuzen Medal is awarded annually in recognition of individuals or organizations for their contributions to democracy or efforts to end discrimination, racism or dictatorial rule.

Previous winners include Amnesty International Netherlands, former German President Richard von Weizsaecker and former Czech president, Vaclav Havel.
