The first North American Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial (GCM) soccer tournament was held in Toronto, the provincial capital of Ontario, Canada from July 7-10, 2016.
The soccer tournament, which is usually organized annually in India since 1982, was held outside India for the first time, where 12 teams from the United States and Canada participated in the round robin tournament.
Toronto Cholsum FC won the first North American Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial gold cup after defeating New York Tibet United in penalty 4-2 on Sunday.
Mr. Kalsang Dhondup, Chairman of Tibetan Sports Association based in Dharamsala, northern India traveled to Toronto to oversee the tournament. He tells VOA that he hopes to host the tournament on a regular basis with the support from fans and that he will discuss this with the local organizers once he returns to India.
The winner received a trophy and cash reward of 3000 Canadian dollars.
