China has released a Tibetan monk of Kanlho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province after serving a four year prison term on May 3, 2015.

Jigme Samten, about 30 years of age from Ngog Gyalmo Monastery was a participant in a 2008 protest against China's repressive policies, where they had called for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet, release of Panchen Lama and rest of the political prisoners, equal freedom for Tibetans, and voiced against the practices of environmental degradation inside Tibet, among other issues.

Samten remained in hiding for three years following the incident in fear of persecution, and upon his return to the monastery on July 2, 2011 the local authorities arrested him that very evening. Based on accusations that he had led the 2008 protest and his alleged involvement in separatist activities, he was given a four year prison term.

After serving his required prison term, Samten's release yesterday was celebrated and received by the local Tibetans with Khataks, a ceremonial Tibetan scarf along both sides of the road.
