Poor quality and falsified medicines have caused a “global pandemic”, according to a collection of research papers published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene on Monday.
Dr. Patrick Lukulay, Vice President of USP’s Global Health Impact Programs, says unsafe medicines have caused hundreds of deaths in Pakistan and Nigeria in recent years.
“Medicine can lead to a serious pandemic,” said Dr. Lukulay, speaking to VOA Tibetan Service. “Just like Ebola or anything that cause mass death, medicine can have similar effects if it is not properly made and secured.”
According to USP, China and India are some of the major sources of poor quality medicines that are distributed globally. Dr. Lukulay calls for the citizens of those countries to demand their countries to improve regulatory system.
