On April 2, 2011, exiled Tibetan news media published the story of a man hunt by Chinese security in Derge for three men who had put up posters calling for freedom in Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama. Two and half years later, one of the men has arrived in Dharamsala. Lobsang Thubten escaped into the mountains and travelled across nomadic areas, constantly avoiding detection from the police. At the end of December, 2012, Thubten finally crossed the Indian border where Indian border patrol picked him up. They treated his frostbites, fed him and then put him into detention. Thubten told VOA that while he was initially grateful to the soldiers for saving his life, he grew despondent and considered killing himself as the months went by and it seemed unlikely that he would ever get to see the Dalai Lama. He was detained for a total of six months at two different detention centers before being released on June 24 when he was allowed to travel to Nepal, from where he was able to go on to Dharamsala, arriving on July 12.
