China Arrests Popular Tibetan Singer

The Chinese authorities in Khyungchu County have arrested a popular Tibetan singer following a concert participated by singers from various parts of Tibet on May 24, 2014.

Gepe, originally from Amdo Ngaba, was arrested by the Barkham County Public Security Bureau after a concert that was aimed at creating awareness among the Tibetan youth about the significance of preserving Tibetan language and culture.

Gepe, being a fan favorite of the night, has a huge following inside Tibet and the Tibetan Diaspora.

A source told VOA's Tibetan Service that Gepe was given permits by relevant offices in the area allowing him to sing without any restrictions, however, was taken away by the Chinese officers following the concert without citing any reason for his arrest.



His current whereabouts and conditions remain unknown.
