Dalai Lama Inaugurates Monastery in the Indian Hill Town of Chauntra


The Dalai Lama today inaugurated a new monastery, Zabsang Choekhor Ling, in Chauntra, about 80 Kms from Dharamsala.

Religious heads as well as political heads of the exile Tibetan administration attended the inaugural ceremonies which was attended by close to 5000 people. Speaking to the monks and nuns present, the Dalai Lama stressed the importance of actually studying Buddhist texts and then making them a p[art of their daily practice. The Dalai Lama also advised them to take pride in their identity and to make more effort studying the intersection of science and Buddhist philosophy. He also thanked the sponsors and patrons of the new monastery.

Exile political leaders, Dr. Lobsang Sangay and Speaker Penpa Tsering, also spoke at the gathering.

The Dalai lama toured the monastery and nearby area in the afternoon and is expected to spend the night at Sabsang Choekhor Ling and the Tibetan children’s village at Gopalpur the next day.
