A 37-year-old former Kirti monk set himself on fire ten day earlier on February 3 in the Ngaba region of eastern Tibet, becoming the 100th Tibetan to self-immolate in protest against China.

Exile sources say Lobsang Namgyal set himself near the local police building in Zoege around 6pm and died at the scene of the protest.

Namgyal is known to have shouted slogans calling for the long life of the Dalai Lama while engulfed in flames.

Chinese security personnel are reported to have cremated Lobsang Namgyal's body and returned his ashes to his family.

Lobsang Namgyal's younger brother Lobsang Sangay has been detained following the protest.

100 Tibetans have set themselves on fire to protest against Chinese rule since 2009 across Tibetan regions, with most of them dying from their injuries.

In the past few months, China has begun a new tactic to discourage self-immolations by detaining and jailing people it deems to have incited the burnings. Last week state media reported that 70 people were detained in an ethnic Tibetan area of Qinghai province in connection with self-immolations.

China has repeatedly denounced exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and overseas Tibetan groups for fomenting the self-immolations.

The Tibetan spiritual leader has called on China to investigate the self-immolations. He has said he is not encouraging them but has called them "understandable".
