A re-creation of the Declaration of Tibetan Independence scroll issued by the 13th Dalai Lama was unveiled by India-based Students for a Free Tibet at a ceremony held in Delhi's Majnu ka Tilla on Wednesday, India's Independence Day.
The national coordinator of Core Group for Tibet, Shri Vijay Kranti unveiled the scroll of proclamation of Tibetan independence.
Around 200 members of the Students for a Free Tibet studying in Delhi University and Jawahar Lal Nehru University, and members of Tibet support groups attended the reading of the independence declaration in three languages: English, Hindi and Tibetan.
Organisers of the event, Students for a Free Tibet, said the scroll gives hopes for an independent Tibet.
"We are organising the unveiling of the declaration of Tibetan independcence scroll on India's independence day to give Tibetans a cause for hope and trust that one day we will gain our independence." said Dorjee Tseten, National Director of Students for a Free Tibet India.
Dorje said that the unveiling of declaration scroll was launched at Dharamsala on May 23, the day of signing 17-point agreement forced upon the Tibetans by China, and thereafter it was taken to more than 15 cities in the United States.
A signature campaign by Indians was held after the ceremony to urge the external affairs minister of India, SM Krishna to speak about Tibet in the international forum. The signatures will be submitted on Mahatma Gandhi's birthday on October 2nd.
The program concluded with a candlelight vigil to pray for the Tibetans who have burned themselves in the series of self-immolation protests from China.
