US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to engage in dialogue with the Dalai Lama, reported Bloomberg.
Clinton met Yang before a regional security meeting Thursday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Dalai Lama has consistently expressed his desire to engage in dailogue with China. Earlier this month, Dalai Lama's special envoys who have led nine rounds of talks with Beijing since 2002, resigned after expressing "frustration" over lack of positive response from China.
The two envoys in their resignation letter said Beijing has expressed no sincere desire to resolve the deteriorating situation inside Tibet by engaging in a substantive dialogue. The envoys also stated that Beijing has not been receptive to Exile Tibetan Administration's middle-way approach that seeks genuine autonomy for Tibetans within China.
The envoys who last met with Chinese side in January 2010 expressed concern over the worserning situation since the large-scale public protests in 2008.
43 self-immolations have been reported since February 2009 across different Tibetan areas inside China. In all cases, the self-immolaters have been reported to have called for return and long life of their spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
U.S. Undersecretary of State Maria Otero in an interview with VOA Tibetan said the spate of self-immolations in Tibetan areas are desperate acts of people who are being denied of their basic human rights.
