The International Campaign for Tibet based in Washington, DC has urged the first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama to devote her attention towards bilingual education during her six day scheduled visit to China on March 20, 2014 accompanied by her daughters and mother.

In a letter to the first lady, Matteo Meccaci, President of the International Campaign for Tibet wrote, "We thank you for your commitment to education. In this light, we would urge you to devote attention during your visit to the challenges of bilingual education in the PRC, primarily in the elementary and secondary school levels. Specifically, we would urge that you inquire about the state of bilingual education as it pertains to Tibetans in Sichuan Province and the steps that are being taken to encourage Tibetan stakeholder involvement."

Mrs. Obama will conclude her China visit with a two day trip to Chengdu, a place that has a significant Tibetan population from March 25 to 26, 2014.
