Tsangyang Gyamtso, one of four monks arrested on the night of March 17 from their monastery in Sog County, part of the Tri-Eastern Counties of Nagchu Prefecture, Tibetan Autonomous Region, is now reportedly sentenced to 12 years in prison.

According to an exile Tibetan observer of Sog situation who wants to remain unidentified, the chant master of Drilda Monastery who is in his late thirties was charged for contacting overseas Tibetans and influencing other monks to engage in anti-China activities.

Gyamtso’s arrest in March followed a series of arrests in connection with Tibet freedom slogans that had appeared on rocks and on the frozen rivers.

According to Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy, Tsewang, Atse, and Gyamtsen were arrested with Tsangyang Gyamtso and Tsewang and had faced one year prison sentence. Their current whereabouts and condition are not available.

The exile Tibetan observer said that the current situation in the Sog region remains strictly tense, where locals do not answer calls from overseas in fear of prosecution as the police officers are arresting Tibetans who have communicated with Tibetans in exile via phone or WeChat.
