A Tibetan resident in New York has started publishing a weekly Tibetan language newspaper that is distributed free of charge.

Tashi Phuntsok, the publisher, tells VOA that he has started this initiative as an expression of his gratitude towards the Dalai Lama for the compassion and guidance he has bestowed upon the Tibetan people.

Phuntsok publishes 2,000 copies, which costs $500 to $700 out of his pocket, with the help of two volunteers. The first paper was published on August 8, 2014.

The paper covers Tibet related issues with some local news, and is distributed to the Tibetan communities in North America.
