Dharamsala Tibetans Greet India on 68th Independence Day


ཐད་ཀར་ཕབ་ལེན་གྱི་དྲ་འབྲེལ།

Tibetans residing in Dharamsala, northern India participated in a celebratory ceremony for India's 68th year of independence from the British rule on August 15, 2014.

At a brief ceremony held at the Kashag Secretariat earlier during the day, Lobsang Sangay, head of the Central Tibetan Administration, unfurled the Indian national flag, while senior officials of the CTA sang the Indian national anthem.

Speaking to reporters, Sangay congratulated the people of India around the world for the success of its new government, and said "This is the first year of Narendra Modi's Prime Ministership and on behalf of all the Tibetans, I wish Shri Modi and his team of cabinet a very successful term." He thanked the Indian government and people for their unwavering support for Tibetans.

Following the ceremony, Sangay attended the official Independence Day celebrations at the Police Ground in lower Dharamshala, and is scheduled to leave for Ludhiana to preside overa Tibetan sweater seller's general body meeting which starts tomorrow morning.

Regional Tibetan Women's Association, Dharamsala and Students for a Free Tibet, India also marked 68th Independence Day of India at Mcleod Square by distributing Ladoos (Indian sweet) to Indians.

"My ancestors struggled hard everyday for many years to win independence for my country, where I enjoy freedom today," said Jyotsna Sarah George, Campaigns Director of Students for a Free Tibet-India. As a young Indian, I find it my responsibility to take their spirit of resistance forward by standing in solidarity with the Tibetan freedom movement"

Tibetan Children's Village and Kirti Monastery in Dharamshala also celebrated the day.
