Reports coming from Tibet say two lay Tibetans set themselves on fire in China protest on Monday around 6:50 pm (local time) in Ngaba in Amdo, Eastern Tibet (Chinese: Aba County, Aba Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.)
Unconfirmed reports say there was a third possible self-immolation by a Kirti Monastery monk and that clashes between police and masses have resulted in one death.
Today's self-immolation from Tibet comes amid series of self-immolations by Tibetan monks and nuns from Tibetan regions, mostly from Ngaba. Last week, two Tibetans from Ngaba, a 24-year-old Tibetan man and a 21-year-old monk from the Kirti monastery, died after setting themselves on fire.
About 50 Tibetans from Tibetan inhabited regions in China have burned themselves since February 2009 demanding the return of the Dalai Lama from exile and freedom in Tibet. Majority of the Tibetans self-immolators have been monks and nuns, but the recent self-immolations point to an increasing number of ordinary Tibetans torching themselves.
The Chinese government has condemned the self-immolations, calling them a form of terrorism. Tibetan exile leader Lobsang Sangay last week blamed Beijing for the Tibetan self-immolations. Expressing concern over the spate of self-immolations, prime minister Sangay requested Tibetans to refrain from such form of protest.
