A recent study shows that HIV-infected patients have a greater risk of developing macular degeneration that is usually related to age, and that the immune system of patients who are in their 40s become more like as if they are in their 70s. According to Dr. Douglas Jabs, macular degeneration can cause vision loss and even blindness. The study says their immune systems were always activated and they had chronic inflammation – a condition that’s been linked to a number of health problems. In a sense, their immune systems had a lot of wear and tear.
