The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile today amended the title of Kalon Tripa to Sikyong (Tibetan Political Leader) in Article 19 of the Charter of the Tibetans in exile and relevant Articles.

The amended motion passed by Kalon Ngodup Dongchung, was unanimously approved after deliberations by members of the Parliament.

During the ensuing debate in the parliament, few lawmakers expressed concerns over the title change, inquiring whether or not it would invite unwanted repercussions and pressure on the existing Tibetan exile administration. Reservations were also raised on whether the title change would effect a departure from the present administrative role of the head of the cabinet.

Many who support the charter amendment bill cites political and historical importance in the name change. However, after heated discussion, the Charter amendment bill number 39 was unanimously adopted in the afternoon session on the 6th day of the ongoing 4th session of the 15th Tibetan Parliament.
