Reports: Another Tibetan Sets Himself on Fire

Tibetans in exile report that another person set himself on fire Wednesday in China's southwestern Sichuan province.

Reports say the self-immolation took place after 6:00 PM local time at an elementary school near the besieged Ngaba town. The person was not identified and it is not clear if it was a man of a woman, because the person was immediately taken away by police. His or her condition remains unknown.

The exile group in Dharamshala, India, says two unidentified monks were arrested in the area. No other details about them were available.

Wednesday's self-immolation in Ngaba coincides with the call by the exiled Tibetan leadership for a worldwide vigil against what it calls China's growing repression against Tibetans.

Tibetan exile group claim that about 20 people have burned themselves since March of last year to protest the government's repression of Tibet's culture and religion.

Officials in Beijing have condemned self-immolations as a form of terrorism. They have accused Tibet's exiled leader the Dalai Lama of supporting them in his fight for an independent Tibet.

The Dalai Lama says he is only fighting for Tibet's cultural autonomy. He has not supported the self-immolations, but he has not condemned them either. In an interview with the BBC last year he has described them as brave and desperate, but futile acts.
