Shingza Rinpoche of Raga monastery has thousands of followers in Amdo. At age 13, he was recognized as the 11th Shingza Rinpoche by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Rinpoche came into exile in 1997 and joined Sera monastery in South India where he received his Geshe degree. He is one of few spiritual leaders who has sat on hunger strikes, and undertaken political and cultural initiatives in the exile Tibetan society. Rinpoche has authored two books in Tibetan, is the founder and editor of www.wokar.net, and started the largest annual Tibetan poetry recital competition in exile. Shingza Rinpoche says that he is not a politician but an activist.
